CA Senator Susan Rubio Demands Congress Close the “Boyfriend Loophole” in the Federal Gun Safety Bill, Protect All Domestic Violence Victims

June 22, 2022

SACRAMENTO, CA – State Senator Susan Rubio (D-Baldwin Park) issued a statement today on the U.S. Senate advancing a bipartisan gun safety measure aimed at keeping firearms out of the hands of dangerous people, including domestic violence abusers.

“I urge Congress to pass gun safety legislation that includes closing the ‘boyfriend loophole.’ Intimate relationships extend beyond marriage licenses – and so does domestic violence. Abusers with firearms are five times more likely to kill their victims. Last week in my home city of Baldwin Park, an abusive boyfriend brutally murdered his girlfriend, Yesli Velazquez Gonzalez, and her 6-year-old son, Angel. Equal protection under the law means all victims should be protected from being gunned down.  I ask everyone to demand their congressional representatives to close the ‘boyfriend loophole’ when they pass the Safer Communities Act”.
