WINGS SEMINAR (WOMEN INSPIRING THE NEXT GENERATION OF SISTERHOOD)

It was an honor to host this year’s WINGS Seminar (Women Inspiring the Next Generation of Sisterhood) for students from across the 22nd Senate District.  It’s important to me to ensure that our youth have the opportunities that I did not have growing up – to learn about things like business etiquette, financial literacy, health care access, and healthy relationships.  I am so pleased to promote our next generation of leaders in this way and can’t wait to hear about all their successes in the future!

DUARTE WOMAN’S CLUB

It was a great afternoon for fellowship and making new connections in the community as I was sworn into the Duarte Woman’s Club. Thank you to Co-Presidents Elizabeth Bitow and Carolina Flores-Helizon for their hospitality and welcoming me to the Club!

As a member of several Woman's Clubs, I cannot stress enough how important the work is that they do. From community outreach and service to mentoring and providing meaningful charitable work, woman's clubs are the backbones of our society. Thank you for inviting me to join you ladies!

MONROVIA HIGH SCHOOL HUMANITIES ACADEMY

It was great to be back in the classroom, speaking with students from the Monrovia High School Humanities Academy and catching up with some of my former students and colleagues! This program provides a space for students who are passionate about the humanities and wish to explore these areas of study during their high school career. I was pleased to share with them how humanities impacted my own journey to the Senate and the importance of civic engagement. I loved hearing the questions and ideas from these young leaders. Let’s continue to explore, question, and connect!

Legislative Updates

I have worked tirelessly to protect people from the harms of tobacco smoke and to prevent students from developing dangerous nicotine addictions.  Partnering with public health organizations to successfully pass my Senate Bill 1230 The STOP & Seize Illegal Tobacco Products Act this legislative session will strengthen California’s flavored tobacco ban and keep addictive vapes and e-cigarettes off store shelves and out of the hands of children and young adults.  My Senate Bill 626 the Close Act that protects hospitality workers and families from second hand smoke went into effect and will ensure hotels and motels are 100% smoke free.  Workers deserve a safe working environment.

Community Resources

Free Money for College

California’s low-income public school students and newborns have access to free money for college and career training as part of the CalKIDS children’s savings account program administered by the state’s ScholarShare Investment Board. Launched in 2022, CalKIDS provides up to $1,500 to nearly 4 million low-income public school students, as well as each child born in the state on or after July 1, 2022.

The state has automatically created the savings accounts, but families need to take action to claim those funds.
