Senator Susan Rubio's Statement on Assemblymember Weber's Appointment as CA Secretary of State
SACRAMENTO, CA – Sen. Susan Rubio (D-Baldwin Park) issued a statement today on Gov. Newsom's appointment of Assemblymember Shirley Weber to become the next California Secretary of State.
"I applaud Governor Gavin Newsom’s excellent choice in nominating Assemblymember Shirley Weber to become California’s next Secretary of State. I had the honor of working with Dr. Weber on key issues of education and equity. She is an incredible leader who will continue protecting the integrity of our elections. And as former teacher and long time educator, we can expect her to be a fierce advocate for our youth and supporter of civic engagement.
Dr. Weber will be the first African-American to ever hold the seat. As the daughter and granddaughter of sharecroppers, she is well aware of the troubling history of voter disenfranchisement in this country and state. I rest assured she will work tirelessly to see that all voices are heard and that every vote counts.
Congratulations Dr. Weber. As a teacher myself, I very much look forward to working with you on strengthening the civic engagement of our youth."
