Senator Susan Rubio Condemns Supreme Court Ruling Allowing Racially Targeted Immigration Stops
SACRAMENTO, Calif. – In response to a U.S. Supreme Court decision allowing immigration agents to resume “roving patrols” in Southern California based on appearance, language, and location, Senator Susan Rubio (D–Baldwin Park) issued a strong statement:
“As a classroom teacher for nearly 20 years, a California State Senator, and an immigrant, I am outraged by the United States Supreme Court’s decision to allow immigration agents to target people based on how they look or what language they speak. This ruling sends a chilling message: that some rights are conditional. That’s not the America I taught my students to believe in.
My elderly parents have been proud U.S. citizens for more than four decades, and now I have to worry they’ll be swept up in a raid just for looking 'too Mexican' at the grocery store. These are citizens – families who have lived here for generations, worked hard, played by the rules, and still get treated like suspects.
I will always fight to protect our constitutional freedoms. No one should live in fear of being stopped, interrogated, or detained simply because they look Latino or speak Spanish. That’s not reasonable suspicion – that’s racial profiling, plain and simple.”
