SACRAMENTO, Calif. – In response to the Trump administration’s sweeping cuts to the U.S. Department of Education, Senator Susan Rubio (D-Baldwin Park) issued a sharp rebuke, warning that these reductions undermine critical support for students, families, and educators.

“As a lifelong educator and advocate for California's students, I am deeply alarmed by the Trump administration's decision to eliminate over 1,300 positions, nearly half of the Department of Education's workforce, as a step toward dismantling the agency entirely. This reckless move threatens the very foundation of our educational system and jeopardizes essential services that support our students, families, and educators. The Department plays a critical role in administering federal student loans, enforcing civil rights laws, and ensuring access to essential education resources.”

“Slashing education funding and gutting the agency meant to support our schools isn’t just irresponsible; it’s a direct attack on students, families, and the future of our country. These cuts won’t make education better; they will make it harder for families to afford college, harder for schools to meet students' unique needs, and harder for kids to succeed. Education should be a path to opportunity, not a political punching bag. I won’t stand by while Washington turns its back on our children. We will keep fighting for our students, teachers, and futures - because strong schools build strong communities and we’re not backing down.”

Senator Rubio spent 20 years as a classroom teacher before being elected to the California Senate in 2018. She has been a steadfast advocate for public education and expanding opportunities for all students. Senator Rubio made it clear that California won’t sit idly by; pledging to fight these harmful cuts and defend all students and educators across the state.
