The restoration of Azusa’s historic Old Schoolhouse — once a site of segregation and forced Americanization — marks a powerful moment of healing, remembrance, and progress. Thanks to the leadership of Azusa Mayor Robert Gonzales and the key support of Assemblymember Blanca Rubio and State Senator Susan Rubio, the city secured a $3 million state grant to relocate and fully restore the 122-year-old building.

Senator Susan Rubio spoke with emotion about the importance of confronting painful histories and ensuring that future generations never repeat the injustices of the past. Drawing a connection between historic discrimination and modern-day challenges facing Latino families, she emphasized that preserving this building is a way to honor those who lived through prejudice while reaffirming a commitment to dignity, inclusion, and justice today.
