Senator Rubio Secures $3 Million for Historic Covina Center for the Performing Arts
SACRAMENTO – Senator Susan Rubio (D-Baldwin Park) announced today that the 2021-22 state budget includes $3 million to help the historic Covina Center for the Performing Arts continue its mission after a devastating year.
“The pandemic has devastated the Covina Center for the Performing Arts, a historic arts space, so I’m delighted that I was able to secure $3 million in critical funding to preserve its cultural impact,” Senator Rubio said. “The performing arts are often an important vehicle for the voiceless to educate and enlighten the wider community, and the Center’s mission to be a positive, active influence to the next generation of artists in the City of Covina and San Gabriel Valley is an important contribution that needs to continue.”
“The City of Covina would like to thank Senator Rubio for her continued efforts to preserve valuable community landmarks like the Covina Center for the Performing Arts,” Mayor Jorge Marquez said. “We applaud Senator Rubio and the State Legislature for their efforts to help local communities emerge from the Covid-19 pandemic, and look forward to the CCPA continuing its one-hundred-year tradition of being a key performing arts venue in the San Gabriel Valley.”
“When I called Senator Rubio about this project, she didn’t hesitate to work on the funding to maintain an iconic building that first opened its doors in 1920 and has become a cultural hub for the City and now the San Gabriel Valley,” said Mayor pro Tem Patricia Cortez. “I’m especially grateful because this funding will relieve stress on our general fund and allow us to expand our city's programs and services that enhance the quality of life for our residents. We look forward to building off the significant work completed by the venue’s current owners and serving as stewards for the performing arts community.”
Senator Susan Rubio represents Senate District 22 in Los Angeles County. It includes the cities of Alhambra, Arcadia, Azusa, Baldwin Park, Covina, El Monte, Industry, Irwindale, La Puente, Monterey Park, San Gabriel, Rosemead, South El Monte, Temple City and West Covina; and unincorporated communities of Avocado Heights, Charter Oak, Citrus, East Pasadena, East San Gabriel, Mayflower Village, North El Monte, South Monrovia Island, South San Gabriel, South San Jose Hills, Valinda, Vincent and West Puente Valley.
