Senator Rubio Hosts Blood Drive to Encourage Donations During Critical Time
WEST COVINA, CA – Today, Senator Susan Rubio (D-Baldwin Park) hosted a blood drive in partnership with the American Red Cross to encourage blood donations during a critical time. The drive collected over 30 pints to meet the needs of patients in local medical facilities.
“Whether it’s a natural disaster, medical emergency, chronic illness, or complicated childbirth, we all know someone who will need a blood donation. Every 2 seconds, someone in the U.S. needs a blood donation. That’s why it’s so important that we raise awareness about the vital need for a diverse blood supply. From my own background I know that Hispanic people are more likely to have Type O blood, making us more likely to be universal donors, but only a small portion of Hispanic people regularly donate blood,” said Senator Susan Rubio. “Working with the American Red Cross, I want to assure everyone who is interested in donating blood that this process is safe, convenient, and private. I’m so grateful to the many people who joined us for today’s event to give the gift of life.”
“The American Red Cross truly appreciates partners like Senator Susan Rubio who understand the importance of blood donation during this critical time,” said Elise Levine, Executive Director, Northern Valleys Chapter, American Red Cross. “It is always challenging to meet the need for blood and plasma in the summer months when school is out and families go on vacation. We applaud the community for coming together today to help those in need. A single blood donation can save more than one life.”
Senator Rubio hosted an open house in partnership with Foothill Transit and the City of West Covina simultaneously. Blood donors and participants were provided a hot lunch courtesy of the West Covina Fire Department. Senator Rubio was available throughout the event to answer questions about California state agencies and upcoming legislation.
Senator Susan Rubio represents Senate District 22.
