Representatives of cities affected by the recent decision to kill the extension of the 710 Freeway voiced concerns Friday about plans to close the Alhambra freeway “stub” at the 10 Freeway.

Alhambra has envisioned reclaiming the 51 acres of concrete freeway lanes from the 10 Freeway north to Valley Boulevard and transforming them into a regional park.

But neighbors say without the roadway extensions already provided, traffic would be redirected into their cities, making congestion worse.

California is set to give the San Gabriel Valley $5.625 million to help address homelessness in the region.

State Sen. Susan Rubio, D-Baldwin Park, began lobbying for the funding immediately after she was elected last November because she had seen homelessness increase in the area while serving on the Baldwin Park City Council. Gov. Gavin Newsom included the funding in the $214.8 billion state budget he signed last week.

SACRAMENTO, CA – State Senator Susan Rubio (D-Baldwin Park) today issued the following statement in response to the United States Supreme Court’s decision to not include a citizenship question in the 2020 census.

"While the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision today on the census citizenship question was encouraging, the fight is not over,” Sen. Rubio said.  “We need to stay vigilant while getting everyone to complete their census forms.  We will continue to protect the privacy of our communities and ensure everyone is counted.”

State Senator Susan Rubio (D-Baldwin Park), whose district includes Alhambra, told the Alhambra Source why she voted for the Portantino measure.

“In order to bring an end to many decades of futile arguments and waste of countless resources, I voted to approve Senate Bill 7 by Senator Anthony Portantino, which codifies in state statute Caltrans’ decision to end the tunnel option to complete the remainder of the 710 freeway,” she said. “The residents have spoken, and it’s time to put to rest that debate.”

"Also included is $5.6 million to augment homelessness services in the San Gabriel Valley, which saw its homeless population increase by nearly 25% this year to 4,479.

The money was added to the budget at the request of state Sen. Susan Rubio (D-Baldwin Park), who said the dollars would help bolster the area’s homelessness plans, provide workforce development training for residents and educate landlords to better assist residents at risk of homelessness. Rubio said addressing homelessness was a top priority among her constituents when she was campaigning for office last year.
