Senator Susan Rubio Statement on Governor Newsom’s 2023-24 Budget Proposal

January 10, 2023

SACRAMENTO, CA – Senator Susan Rubio, D-Baldwin Park, released a statement today on Gov. Gavin Newsom’s proposed 2023-24 budget:

“For a generation of former students and teachers like myself, the boom-and-bust California budget process two decades ago brought instability to schools and homes across the state. Over the past several years, we have rebuilt California for the next generation by prioritizing early education and per pupil spending, supporting small and family-owned businesses, and creating more affordable housing. I applaud Governor Newsom’s prudence, proposing a fiscally responsible budget that avoids deep cuts to fundamental services and invests in Californians by focusing on our children’s education and mental health services; modernizing our shared public health infrastructure; and reversing the impacts of climate change and extreme weather events. These are priorities that I share and will continue to champion.

As we work together over the next few months to craft the final 2023-24 budget, I urge my colleagues and the governor to do more for domestic violence survivors. As we all recover from the pandemic, it is domestic violence survivors who are increasingly isolated, with local shelters struggling to keep up with the demand. Families need our help now and we can prioritize the resources to act. In the coming year, ours can continue to be an economy that works for everyone, especially vulnerable communities.”
