Senator Susan Rubio Introduces School Breakfast Week Resolution

March 10, 2022

SACRAMENTO, CA – Senator Susan Rubio (D-Baldwin Park) introduced a resolution today that recognizes the importance of school nutrition programs and the critical role of staff in making sure our children are provided with vital meals throughout the school day.

Senate Concurrent Resolution 81 recognizes that the Legislature acknowledges that California’s school districts and all the essential employees are considered first responders for overseeing the School Nutrition Programs throughout the pandemic. The Legislature commits to making sure that California children eat breakfast to ensure they excel academically, and improve their concentration which will result in higher testing scores. Additional commitment from the Legislature is shown through the Free School Meals for All Act, which will start this school year to guarantee that children in California are fed.

“As a public-school teacher, I used to see kids starving from not having adequate meals at home, and knew that I had to keep snacks in the classroom to ensure they had the energy to perform well in the classroom” said Senator Rubio. “I’m especially proud that we recognized all the hard work that the staffs did during the pandemic. Let’s keep our focus on the well-being of our students and ensure that no child ever goes hungry.”

“School breakfast is a powerful tool to make sure kids don’t have to start their day with an empty stomach, providing the consistent nutrition they need to learn, grow and reach their full potential,” said Kathy Saile, the director of No Kid Hungry California, which sponsored the bill. “We’re incredibly grateful to Senator Rubio for continuously shining a spotlight on the importance of nutritious school meals, and to the dedicated school nutrition staff all across California working hard each and every day to ensure kids start their day with a nutritious meal.”
