Vicente Fernández Day Resolution Introduced by Senator Susan Rubio

January 19, 2022

SACRAMENTO, CA –Senator Susan Rubio, D-Baldwin Park, today introduced a resolution that proclaims February 17, 2022 as Vicente Fernández Day to honor a global, cultural icon and a voice for generations who passed away on December 12, 2021.

Senate Concurrent Resolution 64 honors Vicente Fernández, an unparalleled Mexican artist and known around the world as “Chente” and “El Rey de la Música Ranchera.” Proudly representing the rich Mexican heritage, he provided a lifetime of performances that embodied the historic folk themes of Mexico, including honor and romance, grit and pain, ranches, and the rural countryside. His death has been mourned by world leaders and countless individuals who remember him for songs that saluted the salt-of-the-earth lives of hardworking, humble people.

“Vicente Fernández was more than ranchero music,” Senator Rubio said. “For more than 50 years, Vicente Fernández was the voice, heart, and spirit of Mexico. With his magnificent voice, he equally exalted the greatest feelings of love and joy. He sang for all of us. In one way or another, everyone saw themselves in one or more of the iconic songs he sang. Vicente transcended time, generations, borders, and genres. When he passed, Mexico suffered a monumental loss. For Mexico, and for all of us Mexicans abroad and Latin American fans who adored his music, he will forever be El Rey.”
