Senator Susan Rubio Tapped for State Senate Leadership

SACRAMENTO, CA – Senate President pro Tempore Toni G. Atkins (D-San Diego) announced today that Senator Susan Rubio (D-Baldwin Park) has been promoted to the California State Senate leadership team as Assistant Majority Whip.

“I am honored to be selected by Senate Pro Tem Toni Atkins to help her lead the California State Senate,” Sen. Rubio said. “I stand ready to work with my colleagues and the governor to find solutions for our housing crisis and to alleviate the impacts of the pandemic on tenants, landlords, small businesses, and schools so that we can help those most in need.”

Senator Rubio recently finished her second year of service in the Senate. She was elected in 2018 after teaching 17 years in public schools and serving 13 years as an elected official in the City of Baldwin Park.

She is the first Latina to chair the Senate Insurance Committee and also serves on several Senate committees, including Transportation; Health; Energy, Utilities and Communications; Governmental Organization; and the Joint Committee on Rules. She is part of the Senate Housing Working Group that is developing policies to address the housing shortage and affordability, and is Co-Chair of the Wildfire Mitigation Group.
