Senator Rubio Secures Funding for Key Priority, Homelessness in the San Gabriel Valley

July 2, 2019

SACRAMENTO, CA – Sen. Susan Rubio (D-Baldwin Park), announced today that the 2019-20 state budget includes $5.6 million to help alleviate the homelessness crisis in the San Gabriel Valley.

“I made tackling the housing and homelessness crisis in the San Gabriel Valley a top priority in my campaign.  Now, in my first year as State Senator, I am proud to have successfully secured $5.6 million to support and empower our local service providers to address this crisis in the way that best fits our regional needs,” Sen. Rubio said.

“Meeting our housing and homelessness needs is a long-term problem, but this funding is a great step in the right direction toward helping the most vulnerable among us to have a roof over their head,” she concluded.

“Through her proactive work, Senator Rubio has carried the banner for solutions to homelessness in the San Gabriel Valley. She models compassion in action for those experiencing homelessness, especially the first-time homeless and families with children. This will lay the groundwork that will positively impact the homeless crisis in our San Gabriel Valley communities,” said Cynthia Sternquist, president of San Gabriel Valley Council of Governments (SGVCOG) and a Temple City council member.

“Senator Rubio’s promise to make ending homelessness in the San Gabriel Valley a priority issue has been more than realized with her successful inclusion in the State Budget of $5.6 million to target homelessness in the San Gabriel Valley. This funding is perfectly timed to provide support for efforts to establish an enduring partnership between lead organizations in the Valley and the County’s Homeless Initiative and Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority (LAHSA),” said Joseph Lyons, president of the San Gabriel Valley Consortium on Homelessness and former mayor of the City of Claremont.

The San Gabriel Valley saw its homeless population increase 24% this year, according to data recently released by LAHSA.
