Advisory: Senate Health Leader to Visit San Diego to Discuss Health Care
Senator Hernandez to convene a Senate Health Committee Informational Hearing on Friday
Senator Hernandez to participate in a health care townhall on Saturday
SACRAMENTO – With their push to repeal the Affordable Care Act (ACA), Republicans in Congress continue to threaten the health care of millions of Californians. Despite growing support for the law, the Republican Congress plans to take health care away from the poor and working class in order to finance tax cuts for the wealthy under the GOP health care plan, otherwise known as the American Health Care Act (AHCA). State and local leaders will gather in San Diego this weekend to highlight the benefits the region has experienced as a result of the expansion of health care coverage and how the GOP’s AHCA could impact California.
Senator Ed Hernandez, O.D. (D-West Covina), Chair of the Senate Health Committee, will be traveling to San Diego to convene a Senate Health Committee Informational Hearing on the AHCA Friday, March 24, and will meet with local residents during a community health care townhall on Saturday, March 25. Senator Hernandez has authored much of the legislation implementing the ACA in California during his tenure in the legislature.
California has led the nation in the implementation of health care reform. Over the first two years of full implementation of the ACA, California experienced the largest percentage point decline in the uninsured rate of any state – a drop from 17.2 percent in 2013 to 7.1 percent in 2016. Nearly 3.7 million individuals have health coverage through the Medi-Cal expansion and more than 1.4 million people have coverage through Covered California.
