Advisory: 2016 Veterans Service Awards

November 2, 2016

Senator Ed Hernandez (D-West Covina) is hosting the fourth annual Veterans Service Awards, honoring outstanding local veterans who have honorably served our country and continued to positively impact the community outside of the uniform. As Veterans Day approaches, it is essential to honor our local veterans for their patriotism, volunteerism, and accomplishments.

In recognition of his extraordinary service in the Vietnam War and his profound impact on the public thereafter, Bob Wieland is being honored as the 2016 Veteran of the Year and the event’s keynote speaker. While attempting to rescue a fallen comrade, Bob stepped on an 82 mm mortar round, losing both his legs instantly. After rehabilitation, he walked across the country on his hands, taking him more than three years, eight months and six days to finish.  He is currently a motivational speaker.

All of the recognized veterans have remarkable stories and come from various branches of the military. The selected veteran honorees for the 2016 Veterans Service Awards are:

  • Bob Wieland
  • Arthur C. Fong
  • Lt. David W. Foster
  • Jerry D. Earley
  • Jorge V. Rosales
  • Mark J. Tavera
