Senator Ed Hernandez

Dear Neighbor,

The Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) is overseeing an environmental evaluation of potential releases of lead and other substances in an area around the battery recycling facility operated by Quemetco, Inc. (Quemetco). The facility is located at 720 S 7th Avenue, City of Industry, CA, 91746.

This work includes a soil evaluation, which involves the collection and analysis of soil samples in residential and commercial areas as well as public streets and waterways. The soil evaluation will help determine if past emissions from the facility’s operations may have impacted the surrounding community and to determine if soil cleanup is necessary. The communities of Avocado Heights, City of Industry, La Puente, and Hacienda Heights are part of the impacted area.

We encourage residents to participate in this evaluation and get the soil in their yards tested. If you would like the soil in your yard tested, please visit DTSC’s project page at:
https://www.dtsc.ca.gov/HazardousWaste/Projects/Quemetco.cfm.

You can also visit Quemetco’s website for more information on the facility. http://www.quemetco.com

If you have additional questions or to learn how to get free blood testing  for your children please contact Elsa Lopez, DTSC Public Participation Specialist at (818) 717‐6571 or via email at Elsa.lopez@dtsc.ca.gov. You can also call Quemetco’s community information line at (626) 364‐1281.

Sincerely,

Dr. Ed Hernandez, O.D.
