Statement on Budget Vote: Increased Funding for Higher Education in California
SACRAMENTO – With the passage of the 2016-17 budget, the California Legislature made key investments to bolster higher education in the state.
Senator Ed Hernandez (D-West Covina) has been fighting to ensure California students have the necessary opportunities for advancement within the higher education system.
A recent letter from the California Latino Legislative Caucus, of which Senator Ed Hernandez is a member and signed on in support, urged for an increased budget investment in the California State University (CSU). This push secured $35 million in the budget for the CSU to increase 2- and 4-year graduation rates, including low-income, first-generation and underrepresented minority students.
Additionally, the budget includes incentivized funding for the University of California to boost California resident enrollment.
“It is essential that the country’s most diverse university system is prioritizing the needs of our state and helping Californians go to college and graduate on time,” said Senator Ed Hernandez. “Through collaborative efforts, we have secured funding for UC and CSU to ensure our future workforce will be prepared to meet the demands of the 21st century. With this budget, we are reaffirming our commitment to higher education in California, one step at a time.”
