Statement: Senator Hernandez on State Audit of the UC System

April 25, 2017

SACRAMENTO – Senator Ed Hernandez, O.D., (D-West Covina) issued the following statement on the recent state audit of the University of California:

“As a publicly funded institution, the University of California should maintain transparency while focusing on the best interests of its students. That is why it is so disappointing to see the recent State Auditor report detailing inappropriate budget practices at the University of California, including a secret reserve fund of $175 million and a lack of cooperation with comprehensive audit requests.

“Education is the greatest equalizer. We strive to provide Californians with access to a quality education that is also affordable to develop our workforce, strengthen our economy, and give people a shot at the American Dream.  We should seek to ensure full transparency, while minimizing the cost and burden to students and families.”
