Advisory: Senators Hernandez, Mitchell and the Women’s Caucus to Host Forum on Protecting Women’s Health in California
Join the Senate Health Leader, Budget Chair and Democratic Members of the CA Legislative Women's Caucus for a discussion on What's at Stake for Women's Health
SACRAMENTO – California has long embraced policies and programs that protect and expand access to comprehensive reproductive health care. As a result, health outcomes have improved, public dollars have been saved, and teen birth and abortion rates in our state are at their lowest in decades.
Join Senator Ed Hernandez (D–West Covina), Chair of the Senate Health Committee, Senator Holly J. Mitchell (D–Los Angeles), Chair of the Senate Budget Committee, Democratic members of the California Legislative Women’s Caucus, and other elected leaders and advocates for a community forum to discuss what's at stake for women's health given the new political climate in Washington, DC. We will examine what must be done to uphold California's values, protect the progress we’ve made, and continue pushing forward throughout Los Angeles County and the state.
For over 30 years, federal law has provided Medi-Cal enrollees with choice in family planning providers, but there has not been a real need before now to place that protection in California statute. The current hostile environment on the federal level towards reproductive rights has made the future of the federal law uncertain. As Chair of the Senate Health Committee, Senator Hernandez has introduced Senate Bill 743, which will serve as a pathway to protect reproductive health access and ensure that Medi-Cal enrollees do not lose access to their preferred providers in the face of anticipated threats on the federal level. This event will highlight this and other essential policies pending in the state Legislature.
